About the Speakers
Ben Wang is an attorney licensed to practice law in California and a registered US patent attorney. He is currently based in the San Francisco Bay Area, having advised local and international technology clients on innovation development and IP protection on a global scale. His practice spans the spectrum of patent procurement, litigation, licensing and portfolio management.
Until April 2019, Ben served as VP and Chief IP Counsel for ZTE TX in the US, where he provided strategic and tactical guidance relating to IP licensing and litigation issues for the company. Prior to joining ZTE TX, Ben established Unilever’s patent group in Shanghai from the ground up, and subsequently led the group for over five years, building patent portfolio, managing patent litigation and advising on legal and IP policy issues for various business units in China and across the globe. Before relocating to China, Ben had been practicing law in the US for over ten years, working at top law firms in New York, Washington DC, and California. He has served as IP counsel for clients ranging from small startup ventures to large Fortune 500 conglomerates.
Ben obtained his Bachelor’s degree from Fudan University, Master’s degree from Harvard University, and Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University. Ben externed for Chief Judge Archer at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and clerked for Judge Turner at the US Court of Federal Claims in Washington DC. Ben taught intellectual property law as a visiting professor at Tsinghua University in Beijing, and gained experience in European patent practice by working at a German law firm in Munich.
Roger Shang is Senior Legal Director at Alibaba Group. He jointed Alibaba in 2008 as its first Chief Patent Counsel and oversaw the development of its patent program. He is now based in Alibaba’s San Mateo office and works on international patent portfolio development, IP licensing and technology collaboration, open source and NPE defense matters. Prior to joining Alibaba, Roger practices patent law at Weil Gotshal & Manges LLP and Knobbe Martens LLP. He grew up in Shanghai, China and received his J.D. Degree from NYU.
